Trip Overview

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek, popularly known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, is one of the most stunning treks in the world. The trek provides generally moderate hiking, majestic scenery, and a mix of cultures incomparable to any other trek in Nepal.

On a few first days on the Annapurna Base Camp trail, we walk on a well-trodden trail meandering through lush oak and rhododendron forest, following the river and passing many beautiful waterfalls. Finally, the hike leads us to the famous viewpoint of Poon Hill, where we will have a fantastic, 360-degree view of the Annapurna range, Mt. Machapuchare (22,943 ft.), Mt. Dhaulagiri (26,794 ft.) at sunrise. Each day, we will also take time to stop in the picturesque villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, Chhomrong, etc., along the trail and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea. At the same time, we rest our legs and observe the traditional Nepalese style of life around us.

We begin walking through the sub-tropical valley, climb up to a glaciated alpine, and eventually make our way to Machapuchare Base Camp and continue to the alpine mountain sanctuary of Annapurna Base Camp (13,550 ft.). We spend a fantastic night at a lodge at Annapurna Base Camp, and we rise early the following day to watch the sun come up and fill the arena of giant peaks surrounding us with golden glitters.

Our 16 days at Annapurna Base Camp Walk start with a scenic drive from Kathmandu- the capital of Nepal- where you will land first as the only international airport is located here. But before leaving Kathmandu city, we shall go on a lively sightseeing tour that we plan. You will explore some of the most fascinating historical and cultural sites around Kathmandu valley, including the famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square.

It will take about 7 hours to reach Pokhara via the land route. Upon reaching Pokhara city, we shall head off to Nayapul and then begin trekking to Tikhedhunga (1,540m). Afterward, we will start walking on a scenic trail filled with lush green forests and reach Ghorepani village on the fifth day. Finally, one of the most anticipated days comes close as we hike up to the famous Poonhill for a bewildering view of the Himalayan mountains in the northern territories of Nepal.

Next, we leave Ghorepani village and hike further up to Machapuchare Base Camp via Chomrong, Dovan, and Deurali villages. We will remain here for the night and take our time to enrich ourselves with the majestic presence of the revered, holy Mt. Machapuchare, which nobody has ever stepped a foot on.

The next day, we begin trekking up towards Annapurna Base Camp, which will not take more than 4 hours to reach. Situated at a high altitude of 4130m, you can get jaw-dropping views of the entire Annapurna range. Later, after taking some photos and exploring the ABC area, we shall begin descending back down to Pokhara city to end our trek.

You must see why our Annapurna Base Camp Hike is one of the best treks in the world!

An Introduction to Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) is at the foot of Mt. Annapurna I (8091 m), the tenth tallest peak in the world. It is the first mountain above 8000m which was summited on 3rd June 1950 by the French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal. Its base camp is a funnel-shaped valley with astonishing views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South (7219 m), Machhapuchhre (6947 m), and Tent Peak (5663 m), and several others. Melting snow from the Annapurna ranges and glaciers form a small river named Modi Khola which can be witnessed throughout the trek. ABC is a high glacial basin that sits 40 km directly north of Pokhara city (one of the busiest trekking hubs with numerous hotels, lodges, lakes, temples, caves, and many more) small cluster of lodges opposite the Annapurna glacier.

Benefits of Annapurna Base Camp Hike

Annapurna Base Camp Tour is a spectacular journey from the same lowland pastures to barren alpine lands. Beginning the journey at Nayapul (1070m), trekkers reach Annapurna Base Camp (4130m), gaining almost 3000 m elevations.

Reaching there, trekkers will sightsee ethnic Gurung settlements of Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, Chomrong, Dovan, Deurali, a mountain base camp (Machapuchhre Base Camp (3,712)), thick rhododendron, pine and fire backwoods, ever-smiling hospitable people, religious and cultural monuments and never-ending ranges of mountains.

Standing at the famous viewpoint of the trek Poon Hill (3210m) (on the 6th day of the trip), trekkers will see the most spectacular views of the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The sunrise and sunset over mighty mountain peaks look breathtaking.

Annapurna Base Camp, a sacred site with mesmerizing view of the mountain ranges, is another advantage of the trek. Surrounded by Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna South (7219m), Gangapurna (7454m), Tharpu Chuli Peak (5663m), Singu Chuli Peak (6501m), and several other peaks, ABC is always worth visiting.

Jhinu Danda, a small hilltop with a natural hot spring, is another attraction of the trek. Trekkers can rest their exhausted muscles by bathing in the natural hot water pool. It is a fantastic gift of nature that people believe that by soaking in the natural hot spring, several gastrological diseases will be recovered.

Pokhara is another major attraction of the Annapurna trek. It is the beginning and ending point of most hikes in the Annapurna and Mustang region. It is a bustling city with hundreds of hotels, lodges and restaurants, seven lakes, a couple of natural caves, waterfalls, and temples (Tal Barahi (a temple in between Phewa Lake) and Bindawasini are the most popular ones) surrounded by hills full of trees with a fantastic view of Mt. Annapurna and Machapuchhre.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route

We kick-start our epic Annapurna journey at Nayapul (1070m) after an hour and thirty minutes drive from Pokhara (820m). Following the rice terraces, and cultivated lands, viewing the beautiful views of landscapes and the rushing Modi River, we reach Tikhedhunga (1540m), our first night's accommodation at the local lodge. The next day, we set a journey to Ulleri (2070m) and further to Ghorepani (2860m), ascending more than 3000 stone stairs (between Tikhedhunga and Ulleri). It will be a bit challenging, yet rewarding journey as trekkers will be welcomed by ever-smiling snowcapped peaks (Annapurna ranges, Machhapuchhare, and Hiunchuli and  Dhaulagiri), green backwoods (rhododendron blossoms during spring (March to May)), chirping sound of rare birds and different ethnic communities. Ghorepani is a cultural showcase where trekkers can explore traditional Nepalese culture, witness typical Nepali lifestyles, interact with locals, and get an insight into their practices.

Early morning (around 4- 4:30) the next day, we begin our upward hike to Poon Hill (3210m) for mesmerizing sunrise over giant massifs. The views from Poon Hill are some of the best you have ever experienced. An uninterrupted, beautiful view of some of the largest and most photogenic Himalayan mountain ranges, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhare, Annapurna II, and Lamjung Himal, is breathtaking.

From Poon Hill, we hike back to Ghorepani and head towards Tadapani (2630m). Now spending four nights more (at Chhomrong, Dovan, Deurali, and Machhapuchhre Base Camp), we reach our ultimate destination –Annapurna Base Camp (4130m). Exploring Annapurna Base Camp and its surrounding, we hike back to Nayapul via Bamboo and Jhinu Danda and conclude our entire trek. From Nayapul, we drive back to Pokhara and the next day to Kathmandu for your international departure.

While trekking to the Annapurna region, both SIM cards work correctly. Personally saying, Namaste is faster and easier for this trek. To obtain a SIM, you need to have:

  • Two passports sized photos
  • The original passport with its copy
  • NPR 100 cash (approx. US$ 1)

In the shop, you need to fill a form provided by telecommunication keeping your detail. Then the shopkeeper gives you a SIM card, and it will be activated after half an hour. After adding the amount to the respective number, you can buy the desired data pack.

While trekking Annapurna Base Camp Trek, most lodges/teahouses have electricity (either hydro or solar) to recharge your electronics. Some of them (especially in the lower parts of the trek) have kept charging stations in every room, but some have a charging station in the lobby, and they charge a certain amount to recharge (per hour basis). The amount may differ from place to place ranging from US$ 2-US$ 7 per hour.
