A hidden sangria-la of the northwest of Nepal lies a region ringed like a horseshoe shape of soaring peaks, scenic valleys ancient shrines, the unexplored territory is called Dolpo. Trekkers witness true adventure while passing several high passes of the high hills, through the alpine sceneries.
Enjoy the fascinating sceneries of pristine waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake, sightsee the exotic wildlife and vegetation of Shey Phoksundo National Park, and encounter herds of yak caravans that across the high Himalayan passes.
Crossing those passes, you will reach some of the highest settlements as Dho-Tarap valley situated at amazing altitudes of 3,660 m to 4,070 m above the sea surface. It seems that Dolpo is out of the world. This region covers approximately 15% of the total territory of Nepal and has been subjectively divided into lower and upper Dolpo that are outer and inner parts of the same regions respectively.
The highest inhabited land in Nepal hides behind the high crossings from the south and lying north-east part of Dhaulagiri and Kali Gandaki gorges. Most of its land area similar to the Tibetan plateau and its lifestyle is alike Tibetans.
As a restricted region of Nepal, any foreigners require a special permit to trek Dolpo. There is still a scarcity of teahouses where trekkers require to have a tented camp throughout the trek.
Trekkers are welcomed by 130 Gompas (Buddhist monasteries) including Shey Gompa in Dolpo that reveals Dolpo is also a religious hub.
Apart from these, this region sustains an abundance of wildlife including snow leopards, Himalayan blue sheep, musk deer, and jackals. Birds include snow pigeons, Himalayan griffons, and several species of pheasant comprising the Impheyan Pheasant-the national bird of Nepal.
