Swargadwari, one of the most significant historical and religious shrines locates in the province no.5, Pyuthan district of western Nepal. The literal meaning of Sworgadwari is Gateway to Heaven. The Sanskrit word Swarga means heaven and Dwari means gateway.
Remaining at 2,121m/6,960ft from the sea level, Sworgadwari is a heavenly site in every aspect as naturally, historically, and religious ones. Along with the lush rhododendron and subtropical coniferous forest, this hilltop offers the areal views of snow-clad peaks including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and other neighboring peaks.
Each year chiliads of Hindu devotees reach Swargadwari believing to get Moksha (nirvana) after their demise. Several legends and myths prove that it is a religious shrine for ages. Hindu sacred scripture mentions that once Indra - King of Gods had visited here during Satya Yuga to perform Yagya. Later, as declared in the Hindu epic Mahabharat, this place was Taposthal where Tapasya (meditation) was completed by the Panch Pandavas while making their journey to Heaven via the Himalayas.
Devotees believe that their doorway to heaven is opened after visiting this bliss sanctuary.
The present structure of this temple and its surrounding was founded by Guru Maharaj Narayan Khatri (Swami Hamsananda). He was born in Rolpa, grown-up there, and migrated here, and explored around. He used to spend most of the time herding and milking cows along with meditation and other performances. Holy fire is burning continuously till then which was burn by Guru Maharaj with his mantras.
Swargadwari is popular for cows as well. Hundreds of cows are kept there and cared for them well. Visitors are welcomed with pure vegetarian food and milk of those cows. The accommodation facility is also provided in the Ashram at a minimum cost.
Not only the Hindus but people from all religions and countries can also visit Swargadwari. It welcomes all the people regardless of their culture, ethnicity, and religious values. A less explored and yet to a very commercialized region of the western region of Nepal is awaiting us.
